Watermarks

Watermarks, or "designs impressed into paper in the manufacturing process" (Gravell.org, 2014) were often used as a kind of trademark for paper manufacturers or printers. Designs of watermarks were anything and everything such as unicorns, flowers, or letters and often help to date a manuscript based on the design chosen. The 1924 edition of Nicholas: A Manhattan Christmas Story contains no watermarks.
